Literacy and Development in the West
Carlo M. Cipolla
In this book I have tried to describe and measure the Literacy Revolution in the West. The story is closely interwoven with the general history of education, and for the author this is a source of great trepidation.
Habent sua fata libelli, wrote Marcus Valerius Martialis, and with very few exceptions, the fate of books on education does not seem to be a particularly felicitous one. At any rate, if after reading this book the reader wishes that I had never learned to write and he had never learned to read, I hope that he will not draw hasty and negative conclusions on the general usefulness and desirability of literacy.
